Babadağ 1,700 m vs 1,900 m: Which Takeoff Do You Fly From?

Babadağ 1,700 m vs 1,900 m: Which Takeoff Do You Fly From?

You do not choose the takeoff. The pilot chooses it from the wind. The 1,700 m south slope is the most-used launch, while the 1,900 m Patara and Kuzey slopes are used when the wind shifts. The higher launch gives a longer glide, but the difference in airtime is smaller than most people expect.

The short answer

Launch Height Access Typical use
Lower slope 1,200 m Cable car or road Winter, strong upper winds, shorter flights
Main south slope 1,700 m Cable car or road The default in the prevailing south and southwest wind
North slope 1,800 m Chairlift from 1,700 m When the wind turns north
Patara slope 1,900 m Road or upper chairlift Southeast and east winds
Kuzey slope 1,900 m Road or upper chairlift North winds near the summit
Babadağ summit 1,969 m Not a public launch The mountain's highest point

The official cable car runs from a base station at 226 m on the Ölüdeniz road to stations at 1,200 m, 1,700 m and 1,800 m, with a chairlift continuing to the 1,900 m peak area. The 1,900 m station serves the Patara and Kuzey takeoffs.

Why 1,700 m is the default

The 1,700 m south slope faces the prevailing south and southwest wind that builds over the lagoon for much of the day. It is wide, it has a prepared surface, and it sits next to the cable-car station, cafés and viewing terraces.

That combination makes it the busiest launch on the mountain. Most tandem flights you see over the Blue Lagoon start there. The flight is long enough to enjoy the lagoon and the coast, and the launch is forgiving for first-time passengers.

When the pilot uses 1,900 m

Babadağ is not a single runway. The upper mountain has the Patara slope for southeast and east winds and the Kuzey slope for north winds. When the wind shifts, the flight moves up or across the mountain rather than cancelling.

A 1,900 m launch gives the pilot more height to work with. In stable air, that can mean a longer glide and a wider view. In strong midday thermals, the pilot may prefer an earlier or later slot to avoid the roughest air.

The 1,900 m launch is not automatically better for a passenger. It is a technical choice. A 1,700 m flight in smooth morning air can feel calmer and last just as long as a 1,900 m flight in bumpy conditions.

The 1,960, 1,965 and 1,969 confusion

You will see the top of Babadağ described as 1,960 m, 1,965 m and 1,969 m. The numbers refer to different measurement points and different operators' marketing. The official cable-car station is 1,900 m, and the summit is commonly listed at 1,969 m.

For a passenger, the practical question is simple: which launch is your flight using today, and is the transfer to that launch included? The exact metre count matters less than the wind and the pilot's judgement.

Does a higher launch mean a longer flight?

Not always. Flight time depends on the height difference between launch and landing, the thermals, the wind and how the pilot manages the descent.

What increases flight time What decreases flight time
A higher launch with good conditions A lower launch
Strong, usable thermals Sinking air or strong wind
A pilot working the ridge A direct approach to the beach
A passenger who wants to stay up A nervous passenger who wants to land

A 1,200 m flight can be short, especially in stable air. A 1,700 m flight in good thermals can last 35 minutes or more. A 1,900 m flight gives the pilot options, but it does not guarantee a longer ride.

Cable car or road?

The cable car is smoother and more scenic. It also avoids the winding mountain road, which helps if you get carsick. The base station is at 226 m on the Ölüdeniz main road, and the ride climbs through the 1,200 m and 1,700 m stations.

The road transfer is used when the cable car is closed, when the launch is not on the cable-car line, or when the operator's package includes a vehicle. The drive is steep and winding, with switchbacks. If you are prone to motion sickness, take the cable car and sit near the front of the vehicle.

What to ask before you book

  1. Which launch is included in the price?
  2. Is the cable-car ticket included or extra?
  3. Who decides the launch on the day?
  4. What happens if the wind changes after we reach the mountain?
  5. Is the flight time guaranteed, or does it depend on conditions?

A good operator will explain that the launch is weather-dependent and that the pilot has the final say. A bad answer is a promise of a specific launch weeks in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1,900 m better than 1,700 m for paragliding?

Not automatically. The higher launch gives more height, but the 1,700 m south slope is the most-used because it faces the prevailing wind and is reliable. The pilot chooses based on conditions.

Can I choose the 1,900 m launch?

You can ask, but the pilot decides. Wind direction, traffic and the day's conditions determine which slope is safe. A request cannot override the weather.

How long is the flight from 1,700 m?

Our flights last 20 to 45 minutes, depending on thermals and wind.

How long is the flight from 1,900 m?

Often similar to 1,700 m, sometimes longer. The extra height gives the pilot more options, but thermals and wind matter more than the metre count.

Why do operators say 1,960 m or 1,965 m?

They are referring to the upper mountain and the summit, which is commonly listed at 1,969 m. The official cable-car station is 1,900 m.

Is the cable car included in the flight price?

Sometimes. Some packages include the cable-car ticket; others use a road transfer. Confirm before you book.

Ask which launch your flight uses

WhatsApp +90 533 923 09 63 with your date and ask which launch is likely that day. We will explain the wind call and whether the cable car is part of your package.
