Ölüdeniz Paragliding: The Complete Guide
Tandem paragliding in Ölüdeniz launches from Babadağ, the mountain behind the Blue Lagoon, and lands on Belcekız beach. Flights last 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the thermals, from takeoffs between 1,200 m and 1,900 m. No experience is needed. This guide covers how the flight works, what it costs, when to fly and how to choose an operator.
What tandem paragliding in Ölüdeniz actually is
You fly with one licensed pilot in a two-person harness under one wing. The pilot controls the launch, the route and the landing. Your only physical job is to jog a few steps at takeoff and stand up as you reach the beach.
Ölüdeniz is on the southwest coast of Turkey, in the Muğla province, about 14 km south of Fethiye town. The flight is famous for the view: Babadağ rises almost 2,000 m directly behind the lagoon, so you descend over pine slopes, the Blue Lagoon and the Mediterranean before touching down at sea level.
Where you launch: the heights of Babadağ
Babadağ has several launch slopes, and the pilot picks the one that matches the wind. You do not choose it from the booking page.
| Launch area | Height | Access | When it is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower slope | 1,200 m | Cable car or road | When upper winds are too strong or the season is quiet |
| Main south slope | 1,700 m | Cable car or road | The most-used launch, facing the prevailing south and southwest wind |
| North slope | 1,800 m | Chairlift from 1,700 m | When the wind turns north |
| Patara and Kuzey slopes | 1,900 m | Road or upper chairlift | High-altitude launches near the summit |
| Babadağ summit | 1,969 m | Not a public launch | The mountain's highest point |
The Babadağ Teleferik cable car starts at 226 m on the Ölüdeniz road and climbs through stations at 1,200 m, 1,700 m and 1,800 m to the 1,900 m station. The upper station serves the Patara and Kuzey takeoffs. The exact launch for your flight is confirmed on the mountain, after the pilot reads the wind.
How long is the flight?
Our tandem flights from Babadağ last 20 to 45 minutes. The difference comes from the thermals on the day, the launch height and how long the pilot can stay up safely.
| What changes the duration | Effect |
|---|---|
| Launch height | A 1,900 m launch gives a longer glide than 1,200 m |
| Thermals | Rising warm air lets the pilot climb and extend the flight |
| Wind | Strong or shifting wind shortens the usable window |
| Passenger comfort | A nervous passenger usually gets a shorter, smoother flight |
| Acrobatics | Spins and wingovers use height quickly |
The flight is only part of the booking. Allow two to three hours from hotel pickup to landing, including the drive up, the briefing and the return transfer.
What the flight feels like
There is no cliff jump and no freefall. The wing inflates above you while you stand on a slope, the pilot calls the run, and a few steps later your feet leave the ground. You sit back into the harness like a chair. The first minute is the most intense; after that the flight is mostly quiet gliding.
If you want a gentle flight, say so before takeoff. If you want spirals and wingovers, ask. A good pilot flies to the passenger's appetite, not the other way around.
Who can fly?
Most healthy adults can fly. Children usually fly from about four or five years old with a parent or guardian present, and Flyspot flies passengers up to 75 who can walk on uneven ground and follow simple instructions. Pregnancy, recent surgery and serious heart, back or balance conditions are reasons to sit it out.
Weight limits vary by operator, wing and weather. Most Ölüdeniz operators publish a ceiling between 100 kg and 110 kg, and some accept heavier passengers after a conversation about fitness and conditions. Flyspot flies passengers aged 5 to 75 who weigh up to 100 kg (90 kg for women).
When to fly
Ölüdeniz flies on suitable days all year. The reliable core season runs from April to early November, with May, June, September and October giving the best balance of warm weather, stable air and smaller crowds. July and August fly well but are hot and busy, and the midday thermals are livelier.
Time of day matters as much as month. Morning flights are smoother and a good choice for nervous flyers. Afternoon flights can stay up longer on thermals but feel bumpier. Sunset flights are photogenic and depend on the season's light.
What it costs
A tandem flight is priced per person. The price normally covers the pilot, the wing and harness, a helmet, insurance and the transfer to the launch. Photos, video and a cable-car ticket may be included or charged separately depending on the package.
Our winter 2026–27 price is US$150 per person, all included. Third-party booking platforms listed standard Ölüdeniz tandem flights at roughly US$110 to US$260 per person in late 2026, with media packages often extra. Those are other operators' listings, not our quote.
Is it safe?
Tandem paragliding in Ölüdeniz is regulated. A commercial pilot must hold a T2 tandem certificate issued under the Turkish Air Sports Federation system, fly for an agency with a tourism sports permit, carry personal accident and third-party liability insurance, and carry a reserve parachute. Passengers are insured with Quick Sigorta, with cover up to US$1,000,000. Every flight also gets a flight card and a passenger briefing.
Accidents are rare but not impossible. The sport involves weather, altitude and equipment, and no honest operator promises zero risk. The strongest safety signal is a pilot who cancels when the wind is wrong. A flight scrubbed for weather is a good decision, not bad service.
How to book
Flights run in fixed slots from early morning to late afternoon. Booking ahead by a few days is sensible in season, and several days ahead is wise in July and August. A US$10 deposit holds your slot and the balance is paid on the day.
If the weather cancels your flight, you get a 100% refund or a free reschedule, whichever suits you. If you are flying on your last day in Ölüdeniz, book an earlier day so a reschedule is still possible.
