What is the FAI?
The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the World Air Sports Federation, was founded in 1905 and is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is the international governing body for air sports and keeps the rules for competitions and world records.
Paragliding and hang gliding are handled by its commission CIVL (Commission Internationale de Vol Libre). Organisations in each member country train and license pilots to standards that follow FAI rules.
The FAI and our licence
Our THK commercial tandem pilot certificate (T-2) states that it was granted “in accordance with THK and FAI regulations” (THK ve FAI yönetmeliklerine uygun olarak). The FAI logo is printed on the certificate.

Flying abroad
For pilots who travel, the FAI’s IPPI card (International Pilot Proficiency Information) describes a pilot’s level in a way that schools and flying sites in other countries recognise.
