P4 is about leaving the local site safely. You learn to read the air for distance flying and, through SIV training, how to recover the wing when something goes wrong.

What it allowsSolo cross-country flying; still no passengers.
Before you start
- P3 certificate
- Health report and course documents
What you learn
- Air traffic rules and airspace
- Cross-country (XC) flight planning
- SIV: simulated incidents over water, such as collapses and spirals, with a rescue boat
- Wing control in stronger conditions
To complete the level
- At least 20 flights and 10 hours in the air
- Thermal climbs (typically two of 700 m or one of 1,000 m)
- Long flights (typically two of one hour or one of two hours)
- Course length: around 30 days, depending on weather
Exact minimums (flights, hours, waiting periods) are set by THK and THSF and are updated from time to time. The numbers on these pages are the typical published minimums; always check the current course announcement before you apply.
